About Me: I love the sport of cycling, and I want to share my love of the sport with others. Over the years of working at High Gear Cyclery of Millburn in Millburn, New Jersey, I have introduced thousands of people into the cycling world. I have set them up with road bikes, hybrids, or mountain bikes depending on their needs and interests. I saw many enthusiastic customers become discouraged by the lack of safe bike routes and the congestion of Northern New Jersey. I also saw many competitive customers struggle with complex training plans for bike racing, triathlons, and charity rides. Finally, I noticed that each and every customer wa s extremely busy with work and family obligations. I decided that I could help cyclists make the next step and become stronger, more confident cyclists. I grew up in South Orange, NJ. I started mountain biking in South Mountain Reservation as a teenager in the mid 90s. I got my first road bike (a Cannondale Team Replica Saeco bike) in 1999. I wasn’t very comfortable with the fit for a long time. The bike was a 60 cm which I felt stretched me out too much. Like most new riders, I had no idea what I was doing. I decided to change that. I started reading lots of cycling books such as Joe Friel’s book and frequenting the numerous cycling forums on the internet. I took the next step when I left for college to go to Cornell University in Ithaca, NY in 2001. The cycling community in Ithaca is very strong, and I learned how to ride, race, and train during the Tuesday night races and the Thursday night time trials. I started working at Millburn Bike Shop in the summers and learned about the bike business. I bought my first powermeter, a PowerTap, in 2002. I read every post on the Wattage Forum, and I especially paid attention to the posts by Charles Howe and Andy Coggan, who wrote the FAQ for training with power. I later hired Charles as my coach. He taught me about 2x20s and other workouts, and I progressed from a functional threshold of 250 watts in 2002 to 320 watts in 2004. In 2005, after graduating from Cornell (with high honors in mathematics and literature), I started coaching myself. I peaked my functional threshold at 350 watts. I raced competitively in the NJ area for the High Gear/Navigators team. I had multiple top 10 finishes in road races, criteriums, and time trials. But I never really had the killer instinct to win. I moved to Paris, France and started riding and racing competitively there. I finally learned how to read and control a race by doing long distance cyclosportives of up 125 miles. I learned how to save energy by hiding in packs and how to expend energy by attacking when everyone is suffering. I raced in France, Belgium, and Italy in 2006, 2007 and 2008. I learned French and made numerous cycling contacts in the country. I saw so many beautiful regions of the country such as the Vercors, Beaufort and Mt. Blanc in the Alps, the area near Hautacam in the Pyrenees, and Mt Ventoux in Provence. Now it’s time to give back and develop new talent in New Jersey. Moshe Silverstein I like whoopsies pies.
